Sevdalini

Pain, melancholy and suffering, the word sevdah has come to mean many things over the years, but the original meaning is love. The traditional lyrical song known as Sevdalinka has its origins in the Balkan regions and is deeply rooted mainly in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also in Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia and North Macedonia. The music and poetry have been interpreted and performed for over 500 years, and have been shaped and reshaped in encounters between different cultures and traditions in the area. Sevdalini co-creates a living musical stew through their various musical backgrounds. Rhythms from Sarajevo’s pulsating streets, violin of both classical music, Swedish folk music and flamenco traditions mix well with this coordinated Malmö-based ensemble. Poignant interpretations of songs and poetry concerning subjects such as passionate love and heartbreak.
