Folk musician, singer-songwriter, and kantele artist Maija Kauhanen is an explosively powerful and versatile one-woman orchestra who has rapidly built a formidable international career. Kauhanen’s art is rooted in the Finnish Karelian tradition, encompassing its instruments, playing techniques, and singing styles. An important part of Maija Kauhanen’s strong interpretations are the stories and lyrics of the songs, which often deal with the fates of women of different ages. The lyrics tell of the challenges of relationships, domestic violence and fears, but also of joy, comfort and hope.
